Age, Health, and The Fitness Self-Talk

“People start counting your age (40 50 and so on) when you have nothing left to count.” I read this quote a few days ago and it honestly blew me away. And then I realized that it is so true!! It doesn’t matter what your age is, but if you have health, wealth, and happiness that you share with others and spread around then you won’t have people even realizing that you are of a certain age and you probably have exceeded the ‘age limit’ that has been going around like for example 60 years.

My grandfather, who died at the age of 82. He had everything, health, wealth and he had a certain vibe of calmness and strength around him that all of us caught up to whenever he was around, I am guessing that comes with age. But there were also those times when he was extremely irritated due to some reason or other. And all of us have those days, don’t we? But here’s a disclaimer, he died due to cancer. To be specific pancreatic cancer, stage 5, and we didn’t know until a week before he passed away that he had been suffering from this for 7-8 years!

But I just said that he had health! He did. He did have health. I remember him telling me once, “I was committed to my health, no matter where I am traveling or how busy I am, I would not miss going on my evening walk.” And as far as I remember, I have always seen him eat at the right time and whatever he thought was the right thing to eat as he was diabetic which is what lead him to cancer.

“Cancer is an illness that comes with age,” That’s what the doc said with a shrug. “The more advance the medicine field gets, the more complex the illnesses and the diseases get.” Quoting his exact words. And in a way it is true. Earlier, things were more natural and so I believe people were more connected to the nature and hence, lived that long too with good health almost all their life.

And now! Well, for starters there is pollution, soil degradation, water contamination, artificial fertilizers on vegetables, imported ‘healthy’ fruits and vegetables, etc., etc., etc… The list could go on and on honestly. Despite all this, our marvelous bodies keep up with everything and we are still living and are going on with our lives for good. And here I am not going to suggest ways around that to live a healthy lifestyle and give the attention that our bodies deserve so that our bodies are nourished and well maintained. There will be another blog for that. Because this one is about fitness self-talk. And listen, you guys, it is important you have one.

But what exactly is fitness self-talk? What is the Self-talk definition? Well for starters, self-talk is something that you tell yourself repeatedly over and over until it gets into your subconscious mind and you start believing, acting, and living by it and most importantly you start to FEEL it with time, yes. But that’s the most crucial part of it. Giving an example, my fitness self-talk goes like this: “I am healthy from the inside out, I am getting healthier by the minute of the day and of my life, I thank the Lord for my health, wealth, and happiness, I eat only what I should and how I should and when I should eat, I accept and love the journey that I have put my body through, I am grateful for my body for carrying me and letting me live the life I live the way I want to live it and I will be fit at 40, 50 and forever just as long as I live”.

Powerful, isn’t it? It’s simple, effective, and extremely powerful. You can mirror this for yourself in your 40 50 and so on. But, first I want you to look into your fitness journey and think for yourself what are your goals and your reality and then start to construct the finest self-talk related to that.

Let me tell you why this works, this works because the things that you tell yourself are more powerful and effective than anything anyone else tells you. When I start to think, believe and say to myself, “Oh, I am so fat, I need to lose weight, I need to look more toner, I need to be fit at 40 50, I need to have long hair.” Or whatever it is that I can add to the list of complaints of my own body that I might have. What happens when I say things like this is that I get more and more sad and agitated with my health, body, and fitness state and never really do anything about it because I am too busy feeling all those negative emotions about my fitness and all of my productive time goes into it rather than productively and positively working on the body.

Now what happens, when I start to repeat my self-talk to myself over and over in a day. It doesn’t matter if I believe in it at the moment or not. The only thing that would matter is whether or not I have finished my self-talk or not. I automatically start to act and live by the words I am telling myself. Because I like it or not, I am deep down starting to believe it, and that is where the real work happens.

My favorite, is, ‘I am fit at 40 50 60, and just as long as I live.’ I mean who wouldn’t want that? I DO! And now that I am telling this to myself, deep down I am always working on it and that one sentence that I tell myself will always be at the back of my mind nagging me when I do something that would not lead me to that which resonates with the image in my mind that I have built.

Anyone can do this! All of us have the power within ourselves to accomplish this and get to the finish in style. That’s all that I had to say and prove that fitness, in reality, is simple. Sometimes we just tend to complicate it with all the drama around it and get lost in the process.

Lastly, Yes, you’ve got this!! If I can do this, so can you!!! Until next time.
