Why you shouldn’t count calories during holidays/vacations

Holidays/ Vacations! Finally! After such a long lockdown, we really should enjoy this time. But are you counting calories during vacation? Stop counting calories! Many of my clients are having thoughts about how they can keep losing weight during their holidays/vacations.

What they often forget is, that they are on holiday/vacation.

Holidays/vacations are to:

– Unwind your soul, feel free whatever you do

– Eat what you like

– Do what you like and

– One important thing is to spend time with family and friends

– Make beautiful memories

Stop Counting Calories!

Counting calories is not what you should do then. No one will ask you how much weight you lost this year. And in one week you wouldn’t gain all back. They will ask you where you were and with whom and if it was nice. What really is important for you, is not to think about what you are going to eat or how much you can eat, or when you must eat.

If you have a look at all of it, then a week is just 2% of a year. And in this week, you won’t gain all the weight, that you lost till now. Especially you worked consistently on yourself. Your body and your eating manners have changed. You will recognize that a lot of things are getting easier than you thought. Although if you don’t believe in it, enjoy your holidays/vacations, every second, every minute of it. Don’t think about what will be after this time. It’s easy to tell you will do the same things as you did before your holidays/vacations.

What I often hear from my clients is that they start to become deeply absorbed by not eating anything, because they are doing a special diet, or they admit that they don’t deserve it. My advice to them is to stop counting calories. Healthy eating manners are not to avoid everything. You should have fun with this, getting to know about what you eat and preparing meals with joy.

Eating is one of the important things that we do in our lifetime. It also means getting together with people and sharing this joy with them. In most cultures are getting together with friends and families a common practice. Therefore – yes, you have holidays/vacations, and yes enjoy it! No counting calories or anything like that. So stop counting calories during that time.

Anyway, I also have some advice what I also do when I go on holidays / vacations. Not only that I’m very curious how it looks like in other countries:

  • Try to walk around a lot! Don’t use the public transportation unless you can walk to the places.

  • If you do long day trips, buy some in your local supermarket some snacks, like nuts, dried fruits or also fresh fruits like bananas or apples. They will make you full and you don’t have to do impulse buying with sweets, chips, or soft drinks. They will often also be very expensive when you buy them in a small kiosk.

  • If you eat out (and I hope you do so!) then take water instead of alcohol, tea, juice, or soft drinks.

  • Look that you take vegetables and salad in your dish. Take a meal that’s grilled and doesn’t have to cook very long and is not deep-fried. Most restaurants have a website where you can have a look at what they serve.

  • Enjoy your holidays/vacations!!! And Stop Counting Calories!

healthy eating, stop counting calories in vacation, chia seed, detox water

My clients have always doubted that they will gain more weight after the holidays/ vacations. But that’s normal. You should enjoy your life, although it’s just a week in the year. Years over years you didn’t look after your body. So, what about a week and gaining maybe 1 or 2 kg? It’s nothing.

It also took a long time for my clients to understand and be aware of what they eat. There is a switch in everyone’s mind that must turn over and then it’s very easy to understand everything.

My gynecologist once said to me: 9 months are coming, and 9 months are going. Sure, that I won’t look after delivery skinny and fit in my old clothes. But he also gives me the motivation to start with listening to my body, what it needs and what it wants.

And that’s also with the holidays/vacations. Stop counting calories then. Enjoy the time and after this nice time trying to get back in the routines and the consistent eating and fitness, what you did before your break. No one will say anything about it. It’s your goal, not anyone’s – and you will achieve it in your time because you are doing this for yourself and not for someone. It’s your health. When you will achieve your goal is also your decision.

If you have questions or need some advice or need motivation, I will be there to support you.
